Both men died at the scene from their injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt. The roadway remained closed for several hours as crews worked at the scene, reopening the lanes later in the morning.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victims.
What Risks Are Associated With Stopping on Highway Shoulders?
Transitional zones between highways and surface streets near Interstate 95 can increase crash risk. In areas like Jacksonville, crews often manage merging traffic carefully while responding to incidents.
Highway shoulders are meant for emergencies, but they still carry risk due to nearby high-speed traffic. Drivers passing close to stopped vehicles may have limited space to react if something changes suddenly.
Standing outside a vehicle on a shoulder can increase exposure to passing traffic. Reduced visibility, driver distraction, and speed differences can all contribute to serious incidents in these areas, especially during early morning hours.
