Why Secondary Crashes Happen on Highways
Secondary crashes often occur when a vehicle is already stopped on a roadway due to an earlier incident. Drivers approaching the scene may not slow down in time, especially in low-light conditions or when traffic is moving faster.
Early morning hours can reduce visibility, making it harder to see stopped vehicles or emergency activity ahead. Distractions or delayed reactions may also increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
Highways require consistent attention and safe following distances. When drivers remain alert and slow down near active scenes, the likelihood of additional crashes decreases.
