Understanding Pedestrian Safety on Roadways
Pedestrian crashes are often severe due to the lack of protection afforded to pedestrians compared with that afforded to vehicle occupants. Even at moderate speeds, a vehicle striking a person can cause life-threatening injuries.
Crossing roads, especially on busy or high-speed streets, increases risk when drivers have limited reaction time or when visibility is poor. Factors such as distraction, road layout, and speed contribute to the likelihood of collisions.
Communities encourage both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert: drivers should watch for people near roadways, and pedestrians should use crosswalks and remain visible. Safety measures such as sidewalks, street lighting, and traffic calming help reduce the likelihood of fatal pedestrian crashes.
