What Can Lead to Head-on Crashes on Rural Highways
Head-on collisions on rural highways often result in severe outcomes due to higher speeds and the lack of barriers between opposing lanes. Roads like two-lane highways may lack medians, increasing the risk when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic.
Curves, elevation changes, and narrow lanes can also affect driver control and visibility. On winding roads, drivers may have less time to react to hazards ahead. Distractions or fatigue can further increase the likelihood of drifting into another lane.
Vehicle type can also play a role. Larger vehicles, such as pickup trucks, may cause greater impact force during a crash. Staying alert and maintaining proper lane position can help reduce the chances of these serious incidents.
