Delmar, MD (April 7, 2026) – A working fire involving an outbuilding was reported on Monday afternoon, April 6, in the 29300 block of Connelly Mill Road in Delmar.
Emergency units responded around 2:35 p.m. and found visible flames upon arrival. Crews worked to contain the fire as it extended beyond the structure into a nearby field.
Additional tankers and brush units were called in to assist with the water supply and to manage the spread. One firefighter was evaluated at the scene before being taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional for further care.
The fire was later brought under control, and no other injuries have been confirmed. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as they become available.
We are thinking of the injured firefighter and wish them a smooth recovery.
How Fires in Outbuildings Can Spread to Nearby Areas
Fires that begin in outbuildings, such as sheds or storage structures, can spread quickly depending on surrounding conditions. These structures often contain tools, fuel, or other materials that may burn rapidly once ignited.
When flames reach open land, such as fields or wooded areas, they can move beyond the original structure. Dry grass, wind, and limited water access may increase the speed of spread. This is why additional units, including tankers and brush crews, are often brought in to support fire suppression efforts.
Firefighters may also face added risks in these situations due to changing fire behavior and exposure to heat or smoke. Quick coordination and access to resources are key in bringing these incidents under control.
