Sun City West, AZ (April 7, 2026) – Multiple crashes along the northbound Loop 303 caused major delays early Tuesday morning near Happy Valley Boulevard in Sun City West. The first collision occurred just before 5:00 a.m. and involved three vehicles, including a construction vehicle working on the freeway.
Emergency units responded and found a bucket truck at the scene, with a person inside at the time of the crash who was not injured. About an hour later, a second crash involving four vehicles was reported near El Mirage Road, approximately two miles from the first incident.
The second collision appeared to occur in traffic backed up from the initial crash. At least two vehicles sustained heavy damage, and one person was seen being taken to an ambulance. The total number of injuries has not been confirmed.
The freeway remained blocked through much of the morning commute before reopening shortly before 9:00 a.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the crashes, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they recover.
How Secondary Crashes Happen on Busy Highways
Secondary crashes often occur when traffic slows or stops due to an earlier incident. Drivers approaching the scene may not realize how quickly traffic has backed up, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions.
Construction zones can add to this risk by narrowing lanes or placing vehicles and workers close to traffic. Sudden changes in speed and lane positions can make it harder for drivers to react in time.
Staying alert, reducing speed, and maintaining a safe following distance can help reduce the risk of a secondary crash.
