How Roadside Work Zones Can Increase Risk for Pedestrians
Roadside work areas can present serious hazards, especially on busy or multi-lane roads. Workers often operate close to moving traffic, sometimes in areas not fully blocked off from passing vehicles.
Two-way left-turn lanes, like the one involved in this crash, are designed for turning traffic but are not intended for pedestrian activity. Drivers may not expect someone to be standing or working in these lanes, which can reduce reaction time.
Lighting conditions, traffic speed, and visibility all affect how safely drivers and workers can share the road. Even during daylight or early evening hours, glare or distractions can make it harder to spot someone in the roadway.
Safety measures such as reflective clothing, warning signs, and reduced speed zones are often used to help lower the risk in these situations.
