Bakersfield, CA (April 24, 2026) – Three people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Harris Rd and Summer Springs Dr in Bakersfield on Thursday evening. The collision was reported around 6:45 p.m. and involved a Toyota SUV, a Ford SUV, and a Honda sedan.
Authorities said all three vehicles were traveling eastbound on Harris Rd before the crash. Investigators determined that the Toyota struck the Ford from behind at high speed, causing a second impact involving the Honda.
A man and a woman inside the Ford were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Two men inside the Honda reported pain following the crash. No additional details about their condition have been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.
How Rear-End Collisions Can Lead to Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Rear-end crashes can trigger chain reactions, especially when vehicles are traveling in the same direction at similar speeds. A strong impact from behind can push a vehicle forward into others nearby, leading to multiple collisions.
Higher speeds often increase the force of impact, which can result in severe damage and a greater risk of fatalities. Intersections can be particularly dangerous, as vehicles may be slowing down or stopping when they are struck.
Road design, including the number of lanes and traffic flow, can also affect how these crashes unfold. When several vehicles are involved, the sequence of impacts can quickly escalate the severity of the situation.
