Chicago, IL (April 25, 2026) – Four people, including two police officers, were taken to the hospital after a crash early Saturday morning, April 25, in downtown Chicago.
The collision happened just after 4:45 a.m. near South Wabash Avenue and East Ida B. Wells Drive. Investigators said a black Jeep SUV traveling westbound failed to obey a traffic signal and struck a marked squad car heading southbound on Wabash Ave.
The 26-year-old driver of the SUV attempted to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody. He was later taken to a hospital in good condition with a head injury. A 26-year-old woman inside the SUV suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, while another 25-year-old woman declined treatment at the scene.
Emergency units had to remove one officer from the squad car after they became trapped inside. Both officers were transported to a hospital and reported to be in good condition.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Traffic Signal Violations Can Lead to Serious City Crashes
Crashes at intersections often occur when a driver fails to follow traffic signals. Running a red light or misjudging timing can lead to side-impact collisions, which are common in urban areas with heavy traffic.
These types of crashes can be severe because vehicles may enter the intersection at full speed. When one vehicle strikes another from the side, there is less protection compared to a front or rear impact.
Busy downtown streets can add to the risk due to frequent stops, turns, and pedestrian activity. Staying alert and obeying signals helps reduce the chance of intersection crashes.
