Salt Lake County, UT (April 27, 2026) – A late-night multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County left two people dead and two others injured on Sunday.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80 near milepost 104, close to the 7200 West area. Authorities reported that a total of five vehicles were involved, including a semi-truck.

Utah Highway Patrol confirmed that two individuals from separate vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional people were transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where significant damage to multiple vehicles was reported. Due to the severity of the crash, westbound I-80 was shut down for several hours as investigators worked to determine what led to the collision and crews cleared debris from the roadway.

Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and keep the injured in our thoughts as they recover.

What Makes Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes So Dangerous?

Multi-vehicle crashes on highways can escalate quickly due to high speeds and dense traffic conditions. When one collision occurs, it can create a chain reaction, involving additional vehicles that may not have enough time or space to stop.

The presence of large vehicles like semi-trucks can increase the severity of these crashes due to their size and weight. Debris, reduced visibility, and sudden traffic slowdowns can further contribute to dangerous conditions.

These incidents often require extended road closures to allow for thorough investigations and safe cleanup, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safe following distances and staying alert while driving.
