According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the collision occurred near mile marker 161 in the southbound lanes. Preliminary findings indicate that a GMC pickup truck was traveling southbound when it struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder of the highway.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the pickup, 21-year-old Jesus Eduardo Silva, and a passenger, 20-year-old Denise Andrade, both from Georgia, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. They were pronounced dead as a result of the impact.
The crash led to a prolonged closure of the southbound lanes of I-75, with traffic being shut down for several hours. The roadway was not fully reopened until shortly after 3:00 p.m., causing significant delays in the area.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details regarding contributing factors have been released at this time.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
Why Collisions with Parked Vehicles on Highways Are Often Fatal
Crashes involving stationary vehicles on highways can be especially severe due to the high speeds at which traffic typically travels. When a moving vehicle strikes a parked truck or trailer, the sudden impact can result in catastrophic damage and life-threatening injuries.
Shoulders are intended for emergency use, but they can still pose risks if drivers are not fully attentive or if visibility is limited. Fatigue, distraction, or failure to notice a stopped vehicle in time can all contribute to these types of collisions.
Safety experts emphasize the importance of remaining alert, reducing speed when approaching stopped vehicles, and moving over when possible to provide a safer buffer for vehicles on the shoulder.
