Lafayette, LA (April 30, 2026) – A Lafayette woman died, and two others were hurt after a rear-end crash shut down eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 in Lafayette for nearly two hours.
The victim has been identified as Elaine Austin, a Lafayette resident. The preliminary investigation indicates Austin was traveling east on I-10 when she slowed down and was struck from behind by another vehicle. The force of the collision pushed her car onto the University Avenue exit ramp, where it came to rest.
Two people in the striking vehicle were also hurt. Both are reported to be in stable condition. All eastbound lanes of I-10 at University Avenue were closed for approximately two hours before reopening just before 6:30 p.m.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
Our sincere condolences go out to Elaine Austin’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
How Do Rear-End Crashes on Louisiana Interstates Typically Unfold?
Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of crashes on Louisiana interstates, and they often happen in a matter of seconds. When traffic slows suddenly, drivers who are following too closely or not paying full attention may not have enough time to stop. The results can be devastating, especially at highway speeds.
Exit ramps near busy interchanges can add another layer of danger. A vehicle forced off the main lanes and onto an exit ramp can come to rest in an unpredictable position, putting both the occupants and other drivers at risk. Congestion near exits, like University Avenue in Lafayette, means traffic patterns shift quickly, and drivers need extra awareness.
