The SUV struck a pickup truck traveling south between 126th and 127th Streets. Both drivers sustained injuries and were airlifted to Christiana Hospital and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment. The extent of their current conditions has not been released.
Coastal Highway was closed for about an hour while crews worked to clear the roadway and document the scene. No arrests have been made at this time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Wrong-Way Crashes on Highways Often Lead to Severe Collisions
Wrong-way crashes on divided highways are among the most dangerous roadway incidents because they often result in head-on impacts. These collisions typically occur at high speeds, leaving little time for drivers to react.
In many cases, prior incidents or confusion near exits and intersections can lead a driver to enter the roadway in the wrong direction. Once a vehicle is traveling against traffic, the risk of a severe crash increases significantly.
High-traffic corridors like Coastal Highway carry a constant flow of vehicles, making wrong-way movement especially hazardous. Visibility, lane design, and driver awareness all play a role in preventing these types of incidents.
