Tampa, FL (May 1, 2026) – A former Florida police officer is facing multiple charges following a high-speed crash that claimed the life of a 6-year-old child in Tampa.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred along Fowler Avenue when 25-year-old Zachary Craig was reportedly driving westbound at speeds exceeding 100 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. Authorities say Craig struck a vehicle carrying a mother and her three children, ages 1, 6, and 8.
The 6-year-old girl suffered severe injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she later died. The other children in the vehicle sustained injuries, though the extent of those injuries has not been fully detailed.
Investigators allege that Craig had activated his emergency lights without a lawful reason prior to the crash. Reports indicate he may have been running late for his shift at the time of the incident. Following the crash, Craig was terminated from his position with the Temple Terrace Police Department for violating department policy.
Craig is now facing charges including vehicular homicide and three counts of reckless driving involving serious bodily injury.
The crash remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
How Does Excessive Speed Increase the Severity of Crashes?
Driving at excessive speeds significantly increases both the likelihood and severity of a crash. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react to changing road conditions, traffic, or unexpected obstacles. Even small errors can quickly lead to catastrophic outcomes.
High-speed collisions also result in much greater force upon impact, which can cause more severe injuries, especially for passengers in smaller or less protected vehicles. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their size and physical development.
Speed limits are designed to balance traffic flow and safety. Adhering to these limits and driving responsibly is critical in reducing the risk of serious or fatal crashes on roadways.
