Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Major Roads Can Become Deadly
Multi-vehicle crashes often become severe when one collision forces vehicles into oncoming traffic. Side-impact crashes and rollovers can cause serious damage because occupants may experience multiple points of impact within seconds. Roads with several lanes and steady nighttime traffic may also increase the chance of chain-reaction accidents.
When a vehicle overturns, passengers face a greater risk of severe injury, especially during high-speed collisions. Drivers can lose control after an initial sideswipe or impact, sending vehicles off the roadway and into fixed objects such as trees or light poles. Nighttime visibility can make it harder for drivers to avoid disabled or spinning vehicles in traffic lanes.
Investigators often review roadway marks, vehicle positions, and traffic patterns after deadly crashes. These details may help explain how the sequence of impacts unfolded and what factors contributed to the collision.
