How Loss of Control Crashes Can Lead to Secondary Pedestrian Impacts
Crashes that begin with a loss of vehicle control can involve multiple impacts in a short period. When a vehicle crosses lanes, strikes objects, or rolls over, it can enter areas where pedestrians may be present.
Fixed objects such as curbs and poles can redirect a vehicle’s path, making its movement less predictable. This can increase the risk of striking someone nearby, especially along busy roadways.
Investigators often review the sequence of impacts, vehicle speed, and road conditions to understand how the vehicle moved after losing control. These factors help explain how a crash can escalate and lead to additional injuries or fatalities.
