Plano, TX (May 2, 2026) – Three drivers were injured Friday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash that caused a tanker truck to overturn in Plano.
According to city officials, the collision occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. at the intersection of Spring Creek Parkway and Windhaven Parkway. Investigators say a white Mazda ran a red light and was struck on the passenger side by an oil tanker traveling through the intersection. The impact pushed the Mazda into a third vehicle, a black sedan, while the tanker overturned onto its side and blocked multiple lanes.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and worked to free the tanker driver from the cab. Both the tanker driver and the driver of the black sedan were transported to a local hospital with injuries. The driver of the Mazda was treated at the scene and released.
Authorities also addressed an environmental hazard after the overturned tanker released used motor oil into a nearby storm drain connected to White Rock Creek. Hazmat teams and city crews initiated containment and cleanup efforts while managing the crash scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
We hope for a full recovery for those injured.
What Makes Crashes Involving Tanker Trucks More Complex?
Crashes involving tanker trucks often present additional challenges beyond the initial collision due to the materials they carry. When a tanker overturns, it can release liquids that create hazardous conditions for both responders and the surrounding environment.
In these situations, emergency crews must coordinate both medical response and environmental containment. Spilled substances can enter drainage systems, nearby waterways, or road surfaces, increasing risks for other drivers and requiring specialized cleanup efforts.
Intersections where high-speed or heavy vehicles meet standard traffic flow can be especially dangerous if traffic signals are not followed. A single mistake, such as running a red light, can lead to a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles and more severe consequences.
