Why Lane Departure Crashes Lead to Serious Injuries
Lane departure accidents can quickly become severe because they often place vehicles directly into oncoming traffic. These crashes may happen when a driver loses control after leaving the roadway or makes a sudden correction while attempting to return to the lane. Overcorrection can cause a vehicle to slide or cross the center line, especially at highway speeds.
Seat belt use also affects injury outcomes during these collisions. Drivers and passengers who are restrained are generally more protected during impact, while unrestrained occupants face a higher risk of fatal injuries. Road conditions, speed, driver reaction time, and vehicle position can all influence how serious a crash becomes.
In many highway accidents, investigators also review vehicle movement, roadway markings, and witness statements to better understand how the collision unfolded.
