What Makes Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Cyclists Especially Dangerous?
Hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists or individuals on electric bikes can be particularly dangerous due to the lack of physical protection compared to occupants inside a vehicle. Even a sideswipe at moderate speed can cause a rider to lose control, leading to falls or secondary impacts with the roadway.
These types of crashes often occur on access roads or along busy corridors where vehicles and smaller forms of transportation share space. Visibility, lane positioning, and driver awareness all play a role in preventing these incidents.
When a driver leaves the scene, it can delay medical care and complicate the investigation. Law enforcement must rely on evidence, witness accounts, and nearby surveillance to identify the responsible party. Remaining at the scene and providing assistance is not only a legal obligation but can also significantly impact the outcome for the injured person.
