Why Roadway Departure Crashes Usually Result in Serious Injuries
Single-vehicle crashes involving trees or fixed objects can lead to severe damage because the force of impact is concentrated in one area of the vehicle. Rural roads with limited lighting, curves, or narrow shoulders may increase the risk of a vehicle leaving the roadway.
Investigators commonly examine tire marks, speed, and roadway conditions to determine why a driver lost control. Vehicle damage and final resting position can also help reconstruct how the crash unfolded before the impact with a fixed object.
Seat belt use is frequently reviewed because restraints can reduce the likelihood of serious harm during sudden roadway departures. In many crashes involving trees, the lack of additional barriers leaves little room for recovery once a vehicle exits the travel lane.
