What Happens During a Residential Fire Investigation?
After a fatal residential fire, investigators typically work to determine how the fire started and how it spread throughout the structure. This process often includes examining burn patterns, damaged materials, electrical systems, and other physical evidence left behind after the flames are extinguished.
Investigators may also review the layout of the home, potential ignition sources, and the condition of smoke alarms or other safety equipment. In some cases, witness statements and photographs taken during firefighting operations can provide additional insight into the sequence of events.
When a death occurs, a medical examination is commonly conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Findings from both the fire investigation and the medical review help clarify what occurred and may inform future fire prevention and safety efforts.
