Investigators continue reviewing what led to the wreck on U.S. 60. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who died and hope the injured people recover safely.
Why Full Highway Closures Can Follow Major Injury Crashes
Full highway closures may be needed if a serious crash blocks all lanes. Emergency units need room to reach injured people, move damaged vehicles, and keep other drivers away from debris.
Air medical transport can also require extra space and time. Crews may need to set up a safe landing zone near the roadway before patients can be flown to a trauma center.
When several people are hurt, the work can take longer. Medical care, vehicle removal, and roadway cleanup may happen in stages. Early reports often focus on the number of people injured, how long the road was closed, and whether more details are still under review.
