New Haven, CT (May 29, 2026) – Serious injuries were reported Thursday afternoon, May 28, after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 91 in New Haven.
The accident was reported at about 4:13 p.m. on northbound Interstate 91 near Exit 3. Connecticut State Police said several vehicles were involved, and an overturned vehicle was also reported.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation said the left three northbound lanes were closed before Exit 3 while emergency crews worked at the scene. Officials said injuries, possibly serious, were reported.
All lanes reopened by about 7:15 p.m. No names, ages, or additional medical details were released in the initial report.
The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue gathering information. We hope everyone injured receives the care and support needed during recovery.
Why Afternoon Interstate Crashes Can Cause Major Delays
Afternoon interstate crashes can quickly create long backups because traffic is often heavier near commuting hours. When several lanes close, drivers have less room to merge, slow down, or avoid the scene.
Overturned vehicle crashes can also require more time to clear because crews may need tow equipment and extra space to remove debris safely. Medical teams may check injured people for head, neck, back, chest, arm, or leg trauma after a major highway collision. Investigators may review vehicle positions, traffic speed, lane movement, road conditions, and witness statements to understand how the crash happened.
