Newark, CA (June 17, 2026) – Injuries were reported on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, after an accident on eastbound State Route 84 near Thornton Avenue.
The California Highway Patrol log listed the first report at about 4:35 p.m. A dark SUV was noted in the initial update, and later information described the vehicle as a blue Toyota 4Runner on the right shoulder.
The Toyota had major front-end damage and was blocking the third lane. A tow truck was requested, and emergency units were initially contacted after possible injuries were reported.
By 4:50 p.m., medical and fire assistance were canceled.
The hit-and-run remains under review as investigators work to confirm what happened on eastbound State Route 84. We hope anyone who was hurt receives the care and support they need after the freeway collision.
Freeway Lane Blockages Can Make Afternoon Travel More Dangerous
Afternoon freeway traffic can change quickly when a vehicle blocks a lane. Drivers may be moving at higher speeds before suddenly needing to slow, merge, or stop. This can raise the risk of another roadway problem behind the original collision.
A disabled SUV with front-end damage can also make surrounding traffic less predictable. Some drivers may brake sharply, while others may try to move around the blocked lane. On busy routes, even one blocked lane can create backups within minutes.
Hit-and-run reports may begin with limited facts. Early dispatch notes often focus on the blocked lane, vehicle description, and whether medical help is needed. More details about the other vehicle, travel direction, and the sequence of contact may take longer to confirm.
