Why Smoke Inhalation Is a Common Risk During Residential Fires
Smoke inhalation is a leading cause of injury during house fires. Even small fires can produce toxic gases and heavy smoke that make breathing difficult.
The heat and chemicals released by burning materials can overwhelm a person in minutes, affecting the lungs and oxygen intake. Children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to smoke exposure.
Firefighters prioritize both rescue and ventilation to reduce smoke inside homes. Working smoke alarms and quick evacuation are critical for reducing the risk of injury in residential fires.
