What to Know About Serious Injury Crashes on New Mexico Freeways
Freeway crashes in New Mexico that result in serious injuries often involve higher speeds and greater force than collisions on surface streets. On stretches of I-25 near urban exits like the Coal Avenue interchange in Albuquerque, traffic patterns can shift quickly as vehicles slow to exit while others continue at freeway speed. That mix of speeds in a short distance can increase the risk of rear-end or sideswipe collisions.
When two or more people are seriously hurt in a single crash, emergency response typically requires multiple units and can lead to extended road closures. Serious injuries in freeway crashes often include broken bones, internal trauma, and head injuries, which can require lengthy hospital stays and recovery periods. New Mexico’s major interstate corridors see a steady number of these incidents each year, particularly during evening hours when visibility and driver attentiveness can both decrease.
