Altoona, AL (March 24, 2026) – A 62-year-old man died on Monday morning, March 23, after a multi-vehicle crash on AL-75 near Rocky Mountain Rd, about three miles north of Altoona in Blount County.
The crash occurred around 8:23 a.m. when a 2022 Lexus IS 350 struck a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Paul G. Johnson. The impact pushed Johnson’s vehicle into a 2015 Toyota Tundra. Johnson was critically injured and transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, where he later died.
The driver of the Lexus was also injured and airlifted to the same hospital for treatment. Two young children, a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old who were passengers in the Toyota, were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.
Authorities said the crash involved multiple vehicles, and the extent of the injuries for the children and the Lexus driver is not fully known.
Investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
How Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Lead to Severe Injuries
Multi-vehicle collisions often result in serious injuries because vehicles can be pushed or spun into one another during the impact. Even moderate-speed crashes can generate enough force to cause critical injuries, particularly to drivers and passengers in smaller vehicles.
Young children and infants are especially vulnerable, which is why car seats and proper restraints are vital. Secondary impacts, in which a vehicle is pushed into another car or a barrier, often cause additional harm beyond the initial collision.
Highways and rural roads with limited visibility or curves can increase the risk of chain-reaction crashes. Emergency responders must carefully secure the scene to safely treat all injured occupants and prevent further accidents while traffic is redirected.
