Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a crash more likely to turn deadly? The type of impact matters a lot. Crashes where one vehicle strikes another broadside, as in a failure to yield at an intersection or turn, usually put occupants closer to the point of impact with less structure to absorb the force.
Does speed change the odds of surviving a crash? Yes. Higher speeds mean more force at impact and less time for a driver to react or avoid a collision, which raises the chances of serious or fatal injury even in a short distance.
Why do investigators stress seat belt use after a crash like this? A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown into the dashboard, windshield or out of the vehicle, which are common causes of the worst injuries in side-impact and turning crashes.
What should a family do after a fatal crash? Families can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency once it's released, and can contact the agency directly with questions about the ongoing investigation.
