Frequently Asked Questions
How long do investigations into fatal crashes typically take?
Timelines vary widely. Agencies usually need lab results, crash reconstruction, and witness interviews before closing a case, a process that can take weeks or months.
Does impairment usually factor into fatal crashes?
It can, but investigators typically won't confirm whether alcohol or drugs played a role until toxicology results come back, which is usually weeks after the crash.
Where do fatal crashes happen most commonly?
Rural highways and stretches of road with higher speed limits see a larger share of fatal crashes than city streets, partly because of the speeds involved and longer emergency response times.
What makes a crash more likely to result in death?
Speed, lack of seatbelt use, and whether the vehicle leaves the roadway or rolls over all raise the odds that a crash turns fatal.
What to Do After a Single-Vehicle Crash in Anna, Illinois
If you're involved in a single-vehicle crash, try to move to a safe spot away from traffic if you're able, and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries, like concussions or internal bleeding, aren't obvious right after a crash. Get the names and badge numbers of responding officers and ask how to obtain a copy of the official crash report once it's filed. If your vehicle needs to be towed, find out where it's being taken and document its condition with photos if you can. Give yourself time to recover, both physically and emotionally, and lean on family, friends, or a counselor if the crash was serious or involved a loss.
