Indianapolis, IN (July 4, 2026) – Two firefighters and one civilian were hurt after a fire broke out on Thursday morning, July 2, at the Lake Castleton Arms Apartments, located at 7554 Kingsport Road in Indianapolis.

The fire started in a vacant townhome unit, and emergency units responded to contain the flames. All three people were taken to area hospitals with slight injuries. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 40 minutes, with assistance from additional emergency units.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but authorities continue to investigate the incident.

We are keeping the injured in our thoughts and hoping for their recovery.

Why Vacant Building Fires Can Still Pose Serious Risks

Fires in vacant homes or apartment units can still create dangerous conditions for both emergency responders and nearby residents. Even when no one is living inside the structure, flames and smoke can spread quickly through shared walls, attics, or connected buildings, increasing the risk of damage and injury.

Emergency crews carefully assess structural stability, fire spread, and ventilation while working to bring the situation under control. Smoke, weakened building materials, and hidden hot spots can remain hazardous even after the visible flames are extinguished. After the fire is out, investigators examine burn patterns, electrical systems, and other physical evidence to help determine how the incident began and whether additional safety concerns are present.
