Washington, IL (June 1, 2026) – Fire crews were called around 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, to a building fire at an apartment building located behind Casey’s near School Street and Grant Street, in Washington.
Officials said between 10 and 12 people were living in the eight-unit complex at the time of the fire. Three people were later hospitalized, though their conditions were not released.
Several people were rescued from second-story windows before emergency units arrived. Neighbors in the area also assisted residents trying to escape the building. The cause of the fire remains under review as investigators continue examining the building. We are keeping the displaced residents and those receiving medical care in our thoughts.
Why Apartment Fires Can Spread Quickly in Multi-Unit Buildings
Fires in apartment complexes can move rapidly because multiple homes are connected within the same structure. Shared walls, hallways, and attic spaces may allow smoke and flames to travel from one unit to another in a short amount of time. Older buildings may also contain materials that burn faster or lack newer fire protection features.
Upper-floor residents can face additional challenges during a fire because smoke naturally rises through stairwells and corridors. In some cases, people may need to escape through windows if normal exits become blocked. Fire investigators often review electrical systems, cooking areas, heating equipment, and structural damage when working to determine how a fire began and spread through a residential building.
