What Risks Do Pedestrians Face on Rural Highways?
Pedestrian crashes on highways can be especially severe due to higher speed limits and limited lighting. Drivers may not expect people to be walking along or crossing rural roads, particularly after dark.
Many highways lack sidewalks or designated crossing points. This can place pedestrians closer to fast-moving traffic. Reduced visibility in the evening hours may further limit reaction time.
Vehicle size and speed both affect stopping distance. On open stretches of road, it may take longer for a driver to slow down once a person is seen in the roadway. These factors often contribute to the serious nature of highway pedestrian collisions.
