ATLANTIC CITY, Atlantic County, N.J., Oct. 5, 2026 — A pedestrian died early Sunday morning, October 4, after being struck by a car along the 2700 block of Pacific Avenue, near the Tropicana Casino, in Atlantic City, according to police.

Atlantic City police said officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle around 12:30 a.m. The pedestrian died at the scene, police said.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to police. It has not been determined whether charges will be filed.

The pedestrian's identity had not been released as of this writing. Police have not said what led up to the crash.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

How Investigators Piece Together a Fatal Pedestrian Crash

When a car strikes and kills a pedestrian, officers first work to secure the scene and treat it as a reconstruction site. That means measuring skid marks, mapping debris, checking traffic signals and crosswalk markings, and photographing the roadway before anything is moved. Investigators often pull video from nearby businesses or traffic cameras to establish exactly where the pedestrian and vehicle were in the moments before impact.

Names are typically withheld until the medical examiner's office confirms identity and relatives are notified in person. That step can take hours or days depending on where family members live and whether records need to be verified. Agencies generally hold back details out of respect for that process, not because information is being hidden.

A toxicology screening, if ordered, can take several weeks to come back from a lab. A full crash reconstruction report, factoring in speed calculations, sightlines, and witness statements, often takes even longer. Police may announce whether charges are coming only after that complete picture is assembled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?

Pedestrians generally have the right of way once they've entered a marked or unmarked crosswalk, and drivers are required to yield. Right of way does not guarantee safety, though, so pedestrians are still advised to make eye contact with drivers before crossing when possible.

What can drivers do to help avoid hitting someone on foot?

Slowing down near crosswalks, intersections, and entertainment or casino districts, avoiding distractions, and scanning both sides of the road before turning all help. Nighttime driving calls for extra caution since pedestrians are harder to see.

What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is hit?

Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries from the initial impact or from hitting the ground afterward. Severity generally depends on vehicle speed and where the person is struck.

What usually causes pedestrian crashes?

Common factors include driver distraction, failure to yield at crosswalks, poor lighting, speeding, and impaired driving by either the driver or the pedestrian.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Atlantic City, NJ

Anyone who witnesses or is involved in a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately and avoid moving an injured person unless there's immediate danger. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries like internal bleeding or concussions don't show symptoms right away.

Cooperating with responding officers, exchanging information, and requesting a copy of the official police report once it's available can help with insurance or medical follow-up. If you live or work in Atlantic City and regularly cross busy corridors, familiarizing yourself with crosswalk locations and lighting conditions can make everyday walking safer.
