GOLDEN VALLEY, Washoe County, Nev., Oct. 5, 2026 — A driver now faces a DUI charge after a hit-and-run crash Saturday afternoon, October 3, on E. Golden Valley Road near Opal Station Drive, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said one driver left the scene after the crash. Deputies later arrested the 64-year-old driver, who is now facing a DUI charge along with a charge of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, according to the sheriff's office.

The other driver involved was taken to a hospital. Their condition has not been released.

The sheriff's office has not released further details on how the crash happened. The case remains under investigation.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

Why Impaired Driving Turns Routine Crashes Into Hit-And-Runs

Drivers who have been drinking often misjudge how close another car is or how fast it is closing, even at low blood alcohol levels well under the legal limit. Reaction time slows, and depth perception and peripheral vision narrow, so a driver may not register another vehicle until the moment of impact. That delay is a major reason crashes happen at intersections and driveways like the kind seen in neighborhood crossings.

Impairment also affects what a driver does after a crash. Panic, confusion, or an attempt to avoid detection can lead someone to drive away, turning a routine collision into a hit-and-run and a separate criminal charge on top of any DUI case.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2023. Many of those crashes involved drivers who were not heavily intoxicated, just "buzzed," showing that even moderate impairment measurably raises the odds of a crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time of day are impaired-driving crashes most common?

They are often associated with nighttime hours, but they happen throughout the day, including afternoons, as alcohol-related impairment is not limited to any single time window.

Is "buzzed" driving really dangerous?

Yes. Even blood alcohol levels below the legal limit slow reaction time and affect judgment of speed and distance, raising crash risk before a driver feels "drunk."

How can I avoid driving after drinking?

Plan a ride home before drinking starts, whether that's a designated driver, rideshare, or taxi, so the decision isn't made after judgment is already affected.

What should I do if I suspect a drunk driver near me?

Keep a safe distance, avoid trying to pass or signal the driver, and report the vehicle's location and description to local law enforcement.

What to Do After a Hit-And-Run Crash in Golden Valley, NV
