Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact if a crash happens. Survival rates drop sharply as a vehicle's speed increases, especially above 30 mph.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections, where turning vehicles and crossing pedestrians share the same space at the same time, similar to this crash.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Reduced visibility in the evening and after dark raises the risk for pedestrians, particularly at intersections without strong lighting.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay at the scene, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries are not immediately obvious.
