How Dust Storm Conditions Can Affect Roadway Safety
Dust storms can make driving dangerous by reducing visibility with little warning. A clear roadway can quickly become hard to see, especially in open rural areas or near fields. Drivers may have trouble spotting stopped vehicles, lane markings, or traffic ahead, and wind can push dust across the road in waves, changing conditions from one stretch to the next.
Two-vehicle crashes during low-visibility conditions can happen when drivers slow suddenly or cannot judge distance. During a 2025 dust storm in central Illinois, multiple crashes were reported as the leading edge of the storm crossed Interstate 74 between Bloomington and Champaign, prompting road closures and resulting in several injuries.
After crashes in dusty conditions, emergency units often need extra space to work safely. Traffic may slow or stop while crews check for injuries, damaged vehicles, and debris on the roadway.
