Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Move as far onto the shoulder as possible, turn on hazard lights, and stay inside the vehicle with a seatbelt on unless it's unsafe to remain there. Watch for approaching traffic before exiting if you must get out.
Why does following distance matter so much on freeways?
A longer gap between vehicles gives drivers more time to react to sudden braking or lane changes ahead, which lowers the chance of rear-ending another car when traffic slows unexpectedly.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Vehicles slowing or stopping near an earlier crash can catch following traffic off guard, which is one reason agencies try to clear lanes and move damaged vehicles to the shoulder quickly.
