BAKERSFIELD, Kern County, Calif., Oct. 2, 2026 — A blue Honda Civic collided with a parked green Toyota Wednesday evening, September 30, on State Route 184 near Paradise Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported just outside Short Stop Liquor.
The CHP said the Toyota was parked at the time of the collision. Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder after the impact, and debris in the roadway was reported as a traffic hazard.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, and the Toyota reportedly sustained enough damage that a tow was requested. A tow company was later called to remove at least one of the vehicless.
The incident remains under investigation. We wish the injured a swift and full recovery.
Where Roadside Crashes Tend to Cluster
Collisions involving a parked vehicle struck by one in motion tend to concentrate on wide, higher-speed state highways rather than narrow residential streets. Roads like SR-184, which carry through traffic at highway speeds but also serve local businesses and frequent pull-offs, create a mismatch: drivers moving at speed share the same lane space as vehicles stopped or parked along the shoulder.
Areas near convenience stores, gas stations, and liquor stores are common sites for this kind of crash because vehicles pull in and out or park briefly along the road edge. Poor lighting, limited shoulder width, and driver inattention near these access points all raise the odds that a moving vehicle drifts into a parked one.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 23,959 passenger-vehicle occupants were killed in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. Many of these crashes, including ones involving stationary vehicles, trace back to a brief lapse in attention instead of a mechanical failure or hazardous road design alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my car is struck while parked?
Call local law enforcement to file a report, document the scene with photos, and exchange insurance information with the other driver if both parties are present. If you weren't in the vehicle, authorities or witnesses may need to help establish what happened.
What injuries are common in collisions involving a parked vehicle?
Occupants of the moving vehicle often experience whiplash, head or chest injuries from sudden deceleration, or cuts from broken glass. Severity typically depends on the speed of the moving vehicle at impact.
What usually causes a moving vehicle to strike a parked one?
Distraction, impaired driving, poor visibility, and misjudging lane position near a shoulder or parking area are among the most frequent factors reported in these crashes.
Does speed make a difference even in a low-speed roadside crash?
Yes. Higher speed at impact increases the force transferred to both vehicles and raises the likelihood of serious injury, even when one vehicle was stationary.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Bakersfield, CA
If you're involved in or witness a crash near a business or roadside area in Bakersfield, move to a safe location if possible and call 911 to report it. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is a good idea since some injuries, like whiplash or internal bruising, aren't immediately obvious.
Keep a copy of any police report filed and note the names of responding agencies for your records. If your vehicle needs towing or storage, ask the responding officer for guidance on where it will be taken. Taking these steps early can make it easier to sort out insurance and medical follow-up in the days after the crash.
