Bakersfield, CA (January 8, 2026) – Emergency crews responded to a deadly collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle late Monday morning at the intersection of State Route 223 and Wible Rd. First responders, including paramedics and fire personnel, rushed to assist multiple individuals hurt in the crash.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the southern edge of Bakersfield. Initial reports indicated a semi-truck collided with a blue Honda CR-V, blocking both lanes of traffic. Smoke was seen rising from the vehicles shortly after the crash. Due to the severity of the impact, the fire department was called in to perform an extrication.
CHP dispatch logs confirm that a large debris field covered the roadway, requiring authorities to shut down SR-223 in both directions at Wible Rd and nearby Stine Rd. Officials described the closure as “long-term,” estimating it would last at least one hour. Emergency responders coordinated with Caltrans to manage the closure, while rotation tow services, including Golden Empire Towing and K & R Towing, were called to the scene.
Tragically, at least one fatality was confirmed, with the Kern County Coroner’s Office notified shortly after 9:45 a.m. Additional details on the identities and conditions of those involved have not yet been released. The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
