Bakersfield, CA (January 28, 2026) – A massive chain-reaction crash involving 43 vehicles shut down a stretch of eastbound Highway 58 in Bakersfield on Tuesday morning, leaving nine people injured and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The incident was reported shortly after 8:00 a.m. east of Tower Line Rd. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash spanned multiple lanes and involved passenger cars, trucks, and possibly commercial vehicles. Authorities stated that injuries ranged from minor to major, with nine victims transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Extreme fog is believed to have played a significant role in the crash. Witnesses described visibility in the area as near zero, and Caltrans cameras showed dense whiteout conditions along that portion of the highway at the time of the incident.
All eastbound lanes of SR-58 were shut down for several hours as first responders worked to assess the injured, remove damaged vehicles, and conduct an on-site investigation. Cleanup and tow operations extended through much of the day due to the scale of the wreckage.
This pileup comes just weeks after a separate 17-car crash on Highway 99 in Fresno, drawing renewed attention to the dangers of driving in dense fog. CHP is urging motorists to reduce speed, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights when driving in low-visibility conditions.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this terrifying incident, and we wish those injured a safe and full recovery.
