Bakersfield, CA (January 5, 2026) – A fatal collision involving a pedestrian occurred Sunday night on westbound Highway 178 near Union Avenue, resulting in the death of one individual, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials confirmed the crash was reported at approximately 9:08 p.m. on January 4. Responding units arrived to find a pedestrian down in the roadway following a vehicle impact. The details of how the person was struck have not yet been released, and it remains unclear if the driver remained at the scene or if any additional vehicles were involved.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office responded and confirmed that the pedestrian died from injuries sustained in the crash. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
As a result of the crash, the Union Avenue off-ramp from Highway 178 was temporarily closed while investigators documented the scene and cleared the area. Traffic was redirected until the scene was fully processed.
