BANNING, Riverside County, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes on westbound Interstate 10 near Highland Springs Avenue in Banning, California, Monday afternoon, October 19, after a van rolled onto its side and a semi-truck also went down, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly before 4:30 p.m. and involved three vehicles, according to dispatch logs. A white van reportedly overturned and came to rest on its side, blocking the middle lane. A semi-truck was also reported down on its side in the slow lane. Someone was seen crawling out of one of the vehicles, suggesting at least one person was hurt.
Firefighters responded to the scene, and traffic was diverted onto the right shoulder while crews worked to clear the vehicles. Tow trucks were requested for both the van and the semi. Lanes reopened in stages over the following two hours, with all lanes back open by about 5:16 p.m.
By early evening, the semi-truck remained on the right shoulder awaiting its own tow.
The cause of the crash remains under review. We hope everyone who was hurt makes a swift and full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do after a crash involving a commercial truck?
Call 911 if you haven't already, move to a safe location away from traffic if possible, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Document the scene with photos if you're able, and get the names of all drivers, witnesses, and the trucking company if one is involved.
Why do trucks need so much distance to stop?
Fully loaded commercial trucks weigh far more than passenger vehicles and require significantly longer braking distances, especially at highway speeds. This is part of why rear-end and multi-vehicle pileups involving trucks can escalate quickly.
What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car accidents?
The size and weight difference between a semi and a passenger vehicle means more force is transferred in a collision. Rollovers, like the one reported here, can also block multiple lanes and create secondary hazards for other drivers.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Banning, CA
If you're involved in or witness a multi-vehicle crash on a highway, your safety comes first. Turn on hazard lights, stay in your vehicle if it's unsafe to exit, and wait for emergency crews if you're in a live traffic lane. Once you're safe, seek medical care promptly, since some injuries from a rollover or sudden impact don't show symptoms right away. Keep records of any medical visits and property damage, and follow up with your insurance company once the scene has cleared and officials have completed their report.
