BELLEVUE, King County, Wash., Nov. 1, 2026 — Three people were hurt on Saturday, October 31, when four vehicles collided on northbound Interstate 405 near Interstate 90 in Bellevue, Washington, according to the Washington State Patrol. Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI, troopers said.
The crash happened in the left lane of northbound I-405 approaching the I-90 interchange. Troopers said the first vehicle struck a crash attenuator positioned between the HOV lane and the adjacent lane. A second vehicle then hit the first, and two more vehicles hit the second in a chain-reaction crash. All four vehicles came to rest in the HOV lane.
The driver of the first vehicle, identified by the state patrol as 29-year-old Laura Garcia, was taken to Overlake Medical Center with injuries. The state patrol said Garcia was charged with DUI and vehicular assault. The driver of the fourth vehicle was also injured and taken to Overlake Medical Center. A passenger in the second vehicle was hurt but was not transported to a hospital. The driver of the third vehicle, identified as 28-year-old Jettoa Sadler, was not injured but was charged with DUI.
The state patrol said all four vehicles were totaled. The highway was shut down for roughly four and a half hours while crews worked the scene. Investigators have determined impairment was a factor in the crash, according to the state patrol.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a highway pileup?
Keeping a safe following distance and slowing down early when traffic is backing up can give drivers more time to react if vehicles ahead stop suddenly.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on hazard lights, stay inside the vehicle if it's safe to do so, and move as far from moving traffic as possible while waiting for responders to clear the scene.
Why does following distance matter so much in multi-vehicle crashes?
A longer gap between vehicles gives drivers more room to brake without triggering a chain-reaction collision when traffic ahead slows or stops unexpectedly.
