Frequently Asked Questions
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators usually have to sort out the order in which vehicles collided and how each one was moving beforehand, which takes longer when there are more cars and more drivers and witnesses to interview.
What typically causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
These crashes commonly start with one vehicle slowing, stopping or colliding, followed by other drivers unable to react in time, especially in heavy traffic or reduced visibility.
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?
A chain reaction usually begins with a single collision or sudden stop, after which following vehicles have too little time or space to avoid the vehicles ahead of them.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?
Leaving extra following distance, slowing down near congested areas or events, and staying alert to brake lights ahead can give drivers more time to react.
