Frequently Asked Questions
Why do trucks need so much room to stop?
Loaded semi trucks weigh many times what a passenger vehicle weighs, and that extra weight means their brakes need much more distance to bring them to a stop, especially at highway speed.
What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car crashes?
The size and weight difference between a semi truck and a passenger vehicle means the smaller vehicle and its occupants usually absorb most of the force in a collision.
What are a truck's blind spots and why do they matter?
Semi trucks have large blind spots along both sides, directly behind the trailer, and close in front of the cab. Drivers in those zones may not be visible to the truck driver, which raises the risk of a collision during lane changes or turns.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, which can cause severe damage to the smaller vehicle's upper structure.
