LOWER SAUCON TOWNSHIP, Northampton County, Pa., Oct. 27, 2026 — A tractor-trailer crossed into oncoming lanes and rolled over on Interstate 78 Monday night, October 26, touching off a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the westbound side for hours.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. between exit 67 and exit 66B in Bethlehem Township. A tractor-trailer hauling cranberry juice was traveling eastbound when the driver reportedly lost control, crossed the median into the westbound lanes and rolled over. The rollover set off a chain reaction, with a second tractor-trailer striking a van, according to the account given by officials.
At least one person was taken to a hospital following the crash. That person's condition has not been released.
The westbound lanes stayed closed for several hours overnight before reopening before 5 a.m. Tuesday, October 27. It is not yet known what caused the initial driver to lose control, and the crash remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes large-truck crashes like this one?
Loss of control from speed, road conditions, mechanical failure, or driver fatigue are common factors. Investigators often look at all of these before determining a cause.
How can other drivers stay safe around tractor-trailers on the highway?
Give trucks extra following distance, avoid lingering in blind spots alongside the cab and trailer, and expect longer stopping distances, especially at night or in wet weather.
Does driver fatigue play a role in truck crashes?
It can. Fatigue slows reaction time and has been linked to lane departures and rollovers, which is why hours-of-service rules exist for commercial drivers.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Truck Crash in Lower Saucon Township, PA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash with a commercial truck, start by checking yourself and others for injuries and calling 911. Stay as far from moving traffic as you safely can, since secondary crashes are common on highways while wreckage is still being cleared. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical provider; some injuries from a rollover or collision don't show symptoms right away. Don't forget to take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, and get contact information from any witnesses nearby. Once police arrive, ask how to get a copy of the crash report, which will matter for insurance and any follow-up questions later. Give yourself time to process what happened. A multi-vehicle crash on a highway is frightening even when the physical injuries are minor.
