STOCKTON, San Joaquin County, Calif., Oct. 27, 2026 — At least one person suffered injuries described as minor after a big rig, a pickup truck, an SUV and a sedan collided Monday afternoon, October 26, on southbound Interstate 5 just north of Fremont Street in Stockton, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol first logged the crash as a major injury collision before updating it to minor injuries once officers assessed the scene. Three lanes were blocked in the immediate aftermath, with crews later reporting the roadway partially cleared and down to one blocked lane as cleanup continued.
Two tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the involved vehicles, and a traffic break was requested to manage the backup. California Highway Patrol units directed traffic in the number three lane while crews worked, and the agency also noted a hazard in the middle lanes tied to the wreckage before the roadway was fully cleared.
Fire personnel responded to the scene, based on radio traffic captured in the incident log. The cause of the pileup has not been released, and the California Highway Patrol has not said how the vehicles came into contact or which one may have triggered the chain reaction. The California Highway Patrol's Stockton area Freeway Service Patrol closed out its assistance on the incident by late afternoon, and the roadway was reported clear shortly after.
No fatalities were reported in connection with the crash.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?
They typically start when one vehicle slows or stops unexpectedly and the vehicles behind it can't react in time, especially in heavy traffic or when following distances are short. Once one impact occurs, following vehicles often strike each other in quick succession.
How can drivers avoid being caught in a pile-up?
Leaving extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead gives you more time to brake safely if traffic suddenly slows. Staying alert for brake lights farther down the road also helps.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on hazard lights, stay inside the vehicle if it's not safe to exit, and move as far from traffic lanes as possible if you must get out. Call 911 if emergency crews haven't yet arrived.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Stockton, CA
If you're involved in a pileup, check yourself and any passengers for injuries before stepping out of the vehicle, and try to move to a safe area away from traffic if possible. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since pain from soft-tissue injuries or whiplash can take hours or days to show up. Make sure to get contact information from other drivers and take photos of vehicle positions and damage if you're able to safely do so. File a report with the California Highway Patrol if one hasn't already been generated at the scene, and keep a copy for your records.
