Why Nighttime Bicycle Collisions Often Result in Severe Injuries
Bicycle crashes that occur at night can be especially dangerous due to reduced visibility for both cyclists and drivers. Even with street lighting, cyclists may be harder to see, particularly at intersections or on multi-lane roads.
Speed and reaction time also play major roles in the severity of injuries. When a bicycle is struck by a motor vehicle, the rider has little physical protection, increasing the likelihood of serious trauma. Intersection areas can present additional risks due to turning vehicles and crossing traffic patterns. Safety experts often emphasize the importance of visibility aids such as reflective clothing and lights, as well as heightened driver awareness in residential and suburban corridors at night.
