Why Early Morning Highway Crashes Can Disrupt Traffic Flow
Crashes during the early morning hours on major expressways can still cause significant traffic disruptions, even when vehicle volumes are lower. Lane closures are often required to allow emergency crews to safely assist injured people and remove damaged vehicles.
Limited visibility in pre-dawn conditions can also contribute to delayed driver reaction times, particularly on high-speed roadways like expressways. Multi-vehicle crashes may involve complex impact patterns that require time to document before lanes can reopen. Even after vehicles are cleared, roadway inspections are often conducted to ensure no debris remains that could create additional hazards for passing traffic.
