What Happens During a Hit-and-Run Crash Investigation?

Hit-and-run investigations require authorities to gather information from multiple sources in an effort to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Investigators may examine physical evidence left at the scene, including vehicle debris, tire marks, and damage patterns that could help determine the type of vehicle involved.

Witness statements, surveillance footage, traffic cameras, and nearby security systems may also provide valuable information. In some cases, investigators release descriptions of vehicles to the public in hopes of generating additional leads.

When a collision results in life-threatening injuries, authorities typically conduct a detailed review of the scene and the events leading up to the crash. The information collected can help establish a timeline and provide a clearer understanding of how the roadway encounter occurred while efforts continue to locate the driver involved.
